Goodbye SAFE, hello start!

Saturday, August 28, 2010 Posted by Tweak

Time doesn’t fly, it zooms at the speed of light in the opposite direction. Well that is how it feels sometimes. On days like today, it feels like I’m having my own personal version of that movie Groundhog Day. I always wake up meaning well, thinking today is the day I will sit down and come up with a great plot concept and start writing, or today I’m going to start eating healthily or go to the gym, ride my bike, knit the world’s longest scarf … ok maybe not really the last one, but you get the gist of my rant. I seem to love the idea of doing all of these things, but when it comes down to it, I’m playing it SAFE – I never start. I be the VICTIM - I never act. I should know better, really. I mean hello, I HAVE read and completed the first lesson of Holly Lisle’s How To Think Sideways course, I’ve told myself I will change, but have I really? I think not.

Well not today people! I am on a mission. It’s time to cut the crap (and no, I’m not literally cutting up poo just to clarify) I am hereby declaring my goals, and I WILL stick to them this time – even though uni starts up again on Monday… oh well, it’s just the way the cookie crumbles I guess!

MY AWESOME GOALS ARE AS FOLLOWS;

  • Complete one writing excercise everyday (minimum duration ten minutes)
  • Write 250 words every day (this can include working on plot, characters, research – anything that will contribute to the end result, which is a good story)
  • Excercise for a minimum of 45 minutes daily (c’mon six pack awesome abs!)
  • 14 day ban from all forms of junkfood (sadly this does mean chocolate, it’s a travesty, I know)
  • Complete HTTS course … every single excercise in there!

Thats about it for now I think. I’m going to have to stick to them now they are published for all to see!

The cat ate my manuscript

Why is it that most authors I have stumbled across, whether published or unpublished, seem to collect cats? On many a forum that I have prowled upon, I have found many whacky cat tales and lovers. Perhaps it is our cats that are our muses, and not our subconscious…

In other news, I have completed lesson two of How to think sideways. I found the sweet spot map excercise to be quite interesting and stumbled across a few words that my muse wrote quite puzzling… and funny!

I’m off now, this was only a quick entry as I promised myself to write at least once on here this week. I will write a longer entry tomorrow when my eyelids are not wrestling with my eyes!

Promises, promises, promises!

Missing Muse

Sunday, August 22, 2010 Posted by Tweak

Some one has stolen my muse. Either that or she has gone walkabout. I’m not sure, she has been gone for a while and I wish she would come back and help me write this story outline I have been working on for months. At the moment it just sounds like the blurb on the back cover of a book. A vague idea of a story but not concrete enough to begin writing – or submit for my writing course I am working on through ACQ. It’s driving me insane, literally. It also doesn’t help that I continue to procrastinate by browsing blog after blog, site after site on writing. Or that when I try and do a little writing excercise all I end up doing is staring at a blank page for hours. Or browsing through the forums on Holly Lisle’s How To Think Sideways site. Frustration, frustration, frustration.

So what do you do when your muse goes missing? Feel free to share your ideas and answers!

Over and out for today!

Here I go again …

It seems like an eternity ago that I sat down and wrote down my goals for 2010. One of those was to write my first novel by November this year. It’s now August and you would think that I would have made fantastic progress by now. Especially considering I am supposed to be doing a writing course through ACQ College on how to write and publish a novel. I haven’t even been able to finish the plot outline for my first assignment! Life just keeps getting in the way. (That and my two monsters children).

Last night I decided enough was enough. No more promising myself I would write after the dishes were done, or the house was cleaned, or the trash taken out, or after I reorganised my desk for the 125th time that week. If there was a special olympics for procrastinators, I think I would take out the gold, silver and bronze medal consecutively! So in an effort to keep the procrastinating at bay, I decided to join Holly Lisle’s “How To Think Sidways” 6 month course. The course is basically a boot camp for writers, and after reading through the first lesson, I am absolutely pumped! The course is giving me the kick up the bum that I need! The course isn’t just about writing one book either, it aims to show you different techniques that will enable you to base your career on writing. Anyway, more about the course later!

I’m going to be posting my progress, along with other random bits and pieces as I go along. Wish me luck!

6 Simple steps to kickstart your motivation

Sunday, April 18, 2010 Posted by Tweak

Some days life can feel impossible. You feel drained of energy, don’t feel like doing anything or going anywhere. You find yourself facing an endless list of things you need to do, and not enough time to do them in. Stress starts to build and you begin to feel like you are not in control of your life. Every body feels like this sometimes, and it is hard to break out of this unmotivated mindset. But it can be done!

Yes, the thought of making positive change can seem like you are being faced with climbing Mount Everest with the world’s largest man clinging to your back. Don’t worry, you aren’t alone. By taking a few small steps, you can redirect your life into a direction you want it to go in. Here are some things I have learned from my own experiences breaking out of my unmotivated mindset;

1. Set one goal
One thing that can create an enormous amount of stress and drain all of your energy, is having too much on your plate. By taking on too much you are unable to maintain your focus, and are most likely not going to achieve your best results. I know it is difficult, but choose one goal for now and focus on it completely. You will find that you will be able to accomplish this goal quicker, and more efficiently, allowing you to move on to the next project.

2. Search for inspiration

Surround yourself with things that inspire you and reflect what you want to achieve. Google your goal, read about other people’s success stories and visualize your own. It is important to be inspired and excited about achieving your goal, and life in general.

3. Positive thinking
This is one of the most important aspects of getting out of that unmotivated mindset. Spend a day or two focusing on your thoughts, and recognize those negative ones. When you begin to recognize the negative thoughts, start replacing them with positive ones. For example, “I can’t do this, it’s too hard!” replace it with ” I can do this, I believe in myself.” Yes, this sounds super cheesy, and may potentially make you feel like a crazy person talking to yourself in your head, but it does work. The key to every success is having a positive mindset.

4. Get active!
Not only is exercise a great way to work through any pent-up stress you may have, but it is also good for you! Physical activity can help prevent heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke, it can also reduce the risks of developing diabetes type II, and help maintain psychological well being. Apart from these very good reasons, physical activity helps generate those rushes of adrenaline which really helps to kick start your motivation. The Australian Government Department of Health and Aging recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each day.

5. Sleep
I’m sure you have heard this one so many times it begins to sound like a broken record. But without enough sleep you decrease your productivity and ability to concentrate. Lack of sleep can also lead to an increase in obesity due to an increase in appetite from sleep deprivation, it can also lead to an increased risk for mental health conditions such as depression. Long story short, you need to get an adequate amount of sleep! If you have trouble sleeping, you can help yourself by establishing sleep and wake schedules to help train your body clock into allowing yourself enough rest, avoid caffeinated products close to bedtime, and avoid keeping your mind active before bed by watching TV, working or other such activities. Make sleep a priority!

6. Believe in yourself

Yes, another phrase used too often. But tell me, have you ever tried to really believe in yourself, or have you just brushed the comment aside, like many things that we see and hear too often these days. Recognize the symptoms of becoming stuck in that unmotivated mindset. Take action immediately and do not allow yourself to fall back into your rut, or you will find yourself having to start from scratch again. Believe in yourself, build on the small successes. Get excited about them, about life. You will soon find yourself on the road to a better life, with you at the wheel and in control.

A word of advice ….

Monday, April 5, 2010 Posted by Tweak

Every body is going to have an opinion on the choices you make, most often they are negative.

At the end of the day it’s totally up to you. You need to make the choice.

After all … it’s your life and no one can live it for you, but you!
